Name Numerology: What Your Name Reveals
Name divination is the idea that the name you were given says something about who you are. Different cultures read names in different ways. In Western numerology, which is the system FortuNetra uses, every letter of your name is turned into a number, and those numbers are added up to reveal three core numbers: your Destiny, Soul Urge and Personality numbers.
This guide explains exactly how those numbers are calculated, what each one describes, and how to work them out for yourself. The same method is used in the free numerology reading on our home page.
The Pythagorean letter values
Western numerology is usually traced back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, and the letter chart it uses is named after him. The 26 letters of the alphabet are written out in rows of nine, so each letter takes a value from 1 to 9:
- 1 – A, J, S
- 2 – B, K, T
- 3 – C, L, U
- 4 – D, M, V
- 5 – E, N, W
- 6 – F, O, X
- 7 – G, P, Y
- 8 – H, Q, Z
- 9 – I, R
Once you have added up the letters, you reduce the total by adding its digits together until you reach a single digit. For example, 53 becomes 5 + 3 = 8. The exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which are not reduced further, because numerologists treat them as carrying a stronger, more demanding version of their single-digit root.
The three name numbers
Destiny number (all letters)
Also called the Expression number, the Destiny number is the sum of every letter in your full name. It describes your natural abilities and the direction your life tends to take when you use them: how you express yourself, the kind of work that suits you, and what you are here to develop.
Soul Urge number (vowels)
Also called the Heart's Desire number, the Soul Urge number uses only the vowels in your name. It describes what you want deep down: your private motivations, what makes you feel fulfilled, and what you need from relationships. Numerologists disagree about the letter Y. FortuNetra always counts Y as a vowel, which is the simplest and most common convention.
Personality number (consonants)
The Personality number uses only the consonants. It describes the side of you that other people notice first: the impression you make, how you come across before people know you well, and the boundaries you show to the world.
A worked example: ALICE MORGAN
Here is the full calculation for the name ALICE MORGAN, using the chart above.
- Letters: A=1, L=3, I=9, C=3, E=5, M=4, O=6, R=9, G=7, A=1, N=5
- Destiny: all letters add up to 53, and 5 + 3 = 8
- Soul Urge: the vowels A, I, E, O and A add up to 1 + 9 + 5 + 6 + 1 = 22, a master number, so it is not reduced
- Personality: the consonants L, C, M, R, G and N add up to 3 + 3 + 4 + 9 + 7 + 5 = 31, and 3 + 1 = 4
A numerologist would read this as someone whose outward manner is steady and dependable (4), whose inner drive is to build something lasting on a large scale (22), and whose path involves ambition, responsibility and material achievement (8).
Which name should you use?
Traditionally, numerologists use your full name as it appears on your birth certificate, including middle names, because it is the name you started life with. Some people also calculate the name they use every day, such as a married name or a nickname, and read it as a description of how they are expressing themselves now. There is no single correct answer; the birth name is the conventional starting point.
Because the Pythagorean chart only covers the Latin alphabet, names written in other scripts need to be written in Latin letters first. Accents are ignored, so José is calculated as JOSE and Müller as MULLER. Hyphens and apostrophes do not count.
Name numbers and your Life Path number
Your name numbers describe what you bring with you. Your Life Path number, calculated from your date of birth, describes the road you travel. Most numerologists see the Life Path as the most important number, and they read the name numbers alongside it: a Destiny number that supports your Life Path suggests a smoother fit between your talents and your circumstances, while very different numbers can point to an inner tension worth understanding.
Other ways of reading names
Western numerology is only one tradition. Chaldean numerology, an older system, uses a different chart with values from 1 to 8. In Japan, a popular form of name divination called seimei handan counts the brush strokes in the characters of a person's name instead of using letters. FortuNetra does not offer readings in these systems; our numerology is based on the Pythagorean chart described above.

Frequently asked questions
Is name numerology the same as numerology?
Name numerology is one part of Western numerology. A full numerology profile also includes numbers calculated from your date of birth, such as your Life Path and Birthday numbers.
Does Y count as a vowel or a consonant?
Numerologists disagree about Y. FortuNetra always counts Y as a vowel, so it is included in your Soul Urge number and not in your Personality number.
Should I include my middle name?
Yes, if you have one. The traditional approach is to use your full birth name, including middle names, because it is the name you were given at birth.
What if my name is not written in the Latin alphabet?
The Pythagorean chart only covers the Latin alphabet, so names in other scripts need to be written in Latin letters first. Accents are ignored, so José is calculated as JOSE.
What are master numbers?
The master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. When a total reduces to one of them, it is not reduced further, because numerologists treat master numbers as a stronger, more demanding form of their root number.
