Compatibility in numerology and astrology

Compatibility in Numerology and Astrology

"Are we compatible?" is one of the oldest questions people bring to astrology and numerology. Both traditions have their own ways of answering it. This guide explains how compatibility is read with Life Path numbers and with zodiac signs, what each method can and cannot tell you, and how to look at a relationship in a more useful way than a simple score.

Compatibility in numerology

In numerology, compatibility is usually read from the Life Path numbers of two people, calculated from their dates of birth. One common approach among numerologists groups the numbers into three families that tend to understand each other easily:

Numbers from the same family often share a rhythm. Numbers from different families can still work well together, but the differences need more conscious attention: a freedom-loving 5 and a security-minded 4, for example, want different things from daily life, and a relationship between them works best when both say so openly.

Many numerologists also compare the Soul Urge numbers of two people, because the Soul Urge describes what each person needs emotionally. Two people with similar Life Paths but very different Soul Urges may get along easily day to day, yet feel something missing at a deeper level.

Compatibility in astrology

Sun signs and the four elements

The simplest astrological comparison uses Sun signs and their elements:

Signs of the same element share a temperament and usually understand each other quickly. Fire and Air tend to energise each other, and Earth and Water tend to support each other. Signs three apart on the zodiac wheel, such as Aries and Cancer, form a square, which astrologers associate with friction that can push both people to grow. Opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra, often feel a strong pull because each has what the other lacks.

Beyond the Sun sign

Sun sign compatibility is only a starting point, because it compares one placement out of many. When astrologers look at a real relationship, they give at least as much weight to other parts of the chart:

The full comparison of two birth charts is called synastry. It looks at the aspects that one person's planets make to the other person's planets. A harmonious aspect between one partner's Moon and the other's Venus, for example, is traditionally read as natural tenderness, while a tense aspect between two Mars placements suggests arguments that need clear rules.

What compatibility readings can and cannot tell you

No chart comparison or number pairing can decide whether a relationship will last. Plenty of "incompatible" couples are happy, and plenty of "perfect matches" are not. What these traditions can do is give you a vocabulary for differences: why one of you needs time alone after an argument and the other needs to talk it through, or why one of you plans while the other improvises. Used this way, compatibility is not a verdict but a conversation starter.

Asking about a relationship on FortuNetra

FortuNetra does not currently offer a two-person compatibility reading. You can, however, ask about a relationship in your own free reading. When you choose a love or relationship topic, the reader pays particular attention to your Moon sign and, if you entered your name, your Soul Urge number, and relates them to your question. Questions such as "What do I need to feel secure in this relationship?" tend to give more useful answers than "Are we meant to be?"

Frequently asked questions

Can FortuNetra compare two people?

Not at the moment. FortuNetra does not offer a two-person compatibility reading, but you can ask about a relationship in your own free reading, and our sign and Life Path guides describe the traditional compatibility of each sign and number.

Which Life Path numbers are most compatible?

One common approach groups the numbers into three families: 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; and 3, 6 and 9. Numbers in the same family tend to understand each other easily, but any combination can work when both people understand their differences.

Is Sun sign compatibility accurate?

Sun sign compatibility is only a starting point, because it compares one placement out of many. Astrologers also compare the Moon, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant, and the full comparison of two charts is called synastry.

What is synastry?

Synastry is the comparison of two birth charts. It looks at the aspects that one person's planets make to the other person's planets to describe how the two people interact.
